For this lesson we will read an ancient text (extract from Ἱέρων by Ξενοφών) just for the pleasure of it. We don’t need, at this stage, to explain it elaborately; we will only stress a few things.

Here we learn some pronouns and verbs and try to form simple sentences.
If you don’t know the Greek alphabet and pronunciation, you need to study these posts first:
If you are familiar with Greek pronunciation, continue with the lesson .
ἐγώ εἰμί = I am
σύ εἶ = you are
οὗτος ἐστί(ν) = he is
αὗτη ἐστί = she is
τοῡτο ἐστί = it is
ἡμεῑς ἐσμέν = we are
ὑμεῑς ἐστέ = you are
οὗτοι εἰσί(ν) = they are
αὗται εἰσί = they are (feminine)
ταῡτα εἰσί = they are (neutral)
You can see above the persona pronouns, too. ( I, you…)
We don’t necessarily use them with the verb. Any verb can be mentioned without the pronoun.
e.g. πολίτης εἰμί = citizen I am / I am a citizen ( words can be put in any order in Greek)
Some sentences
οὗτος ἐστί γεωρύχος = this / he is a man who digs the ground
ἐστέ ὑμείς τοξόται; =are you archers ?
τίς εἶ;= who are you?
ναύτης εἰμί = I am a sailor
Don’t mind about the signs above the letters at this moment. We will explain them at a later lesson. Just repeat aloud 2-3 times and copy the lesson (with or without the signs above the letters)
